Chapter Eighteen

‘I think we’re supposed to be walking buddies for the day,’ a woman wearing excessively long shorts and hefty walking boots said to Chloe.

Chloe smiled gracefully as she made her way over to stand next to Kemi. ‘If you don’t mind,’ Chloe said quietly, ‘how about you pair up with this lady,’ she pointed at the woman talking to Kemi on the same subject, ‘so I can buddy up with my friend here.’

Both women looked each other up and down then nodded and moved away.

‘I think we dodged a bullet there, Kemi,’ Chloe said once they were out of earshot.

‘Oh, I don’t know, the lady I was talking to seemed nice enough.’

‘Oh, right. Do you want to walk with her, then?’ Chloe asked, her eyes narrowed like a cat about to attack. It was obvious Kemi was trying to hide something. And now Chloe knew it involved Eva, she was determined to get it out of her before the end of the day. There was no way she was going to let this go.

‘No, of course not,’ Kemi said, the tension in her face evident.

‘You looking forward to today?’

‘Mmm. Oh yes, I love a nice walk in the countryside.’

‘Really?’ Chloe couldn’t hide the surprise in her voice. She never took Kemi for one of the rambling set.

‘No,’ Kemi said, laughing then turning to whisper conspiratorially to Chloe. ‘I’d sooner be in a nice day spa having a facial and a relaxing massage to be honest, but I signed up so I’m going to try and make the most of it.’

‘I’m with you on the spa thing though.’

The woman leading the walk blew her whistle so loudly it nearly deafened Chloe, and as she shook her head to try and stop the buzzing in her ears, the group slowly began to move away.

It was a sizeable crowd and Chloe had no real desire to get mixed up in the middle of it, so she walked slowly in the hope Kemi wouldn’t mind being at the back with her.

‘I’m glad we all came here, Kemi. It’s given us time to re-connect with each other after all that’s happened.’

‘Hmm.’

‘You don’t sound too sure.’

‘No, I think it’s done us all the world of good.’

‘Me too. The thought of anything or anyone,’ Chloe quickly added, ‘coming between us would literally break my heart. Lovers come and go, but friends are forever, right?’

When Kemi failed to respond she pressed on. ‘Don’t you think?’

‘Think?’

‘Get your head out of the clouds, Kemi, I’m talking about our friendship and how important it is.’

‘Of course it is,’ Kemi said. ‘Come on, let’s walk a bit quicker, we’re getting left behind.’

Chloe reached out and grabbed hold of Kemi’s arm bringing her to an immediate stop. ‘Is something wrong?’

Kemi’s eyes fell to the ground. ‘Wrong? No. Like what?’

‘I dunno. You’d tell me if there was, wouldn’t you?’

‘Of course I would. To be honest I’m tired and a little hungover. But everything’s good.’

Kemi said it with such sincerity that Chloe decided in that moment that Eva had been winding her up just to get a reaction out of her.
